i is for iris

i is for iris.

just like vincent van gogh, i love irises. i remember the iris plants that blossomed every year alongside the house i grew up in. i love that irises are a sign that spring has in fact sprung and i can’t wait for my iris bulb, planted last fall, to burst into color. also, did you know that some gin makers use iris flowers to add flavor and color? who knew. i haven’t illustrated any flowers for this project yet, so today seemed like a good day to start.

h is for hope

h is for hope.

oh man, do i have a special treat for you today. i could not pass up the opportunity to illustrate the most exciting headline of my day. peyton manning is coming to denver. i repeat: PEYTON MANNING is coming to denver. maybe this obey style poster has been overdone, but it just felt fitting. i’ve got reason to hope because our 2012 season is looking up with a 4 time MVP quarterback in our pocket (figuratively and literally speaking).

hip hip hazzah!

g is for gas pump

g is for gas and today’s illustration is an ode to my papa bear, who owned and operated a station for years and years. i miss his grin and the stubbly kisses he’d plant on my cheek.

f is for fox

f is for fox.

i know, i know…i already illustrated a fox this year. well, i am justifying the repeated subject matter with the fact that this is a very different fox! i enjoyed making my elephant yesterday and it inspired me to try a new approach with this crafty little pup.

my favorite inspirations come from nature. i’m alwaysnamazed at the endless variety of creatures and plants that fill the earth and how creative God was when he made them all.

e is for elephant

more like, e is for….elerFUNt!

i LOVE elephants. they have always been my favorite animal and i can’t shake my fondness for the big lumpy creatures. i adore their wrinkly skin, floppy ears and ginormous feet. if you ever go to the zoo with me, you’ll probably have to pry me away from mimi and dolly’s habitat – especially now that the denver zoo is expanding the area. i can’t wait to see the new elephant passage. anyway….

i hope you enjoy this lil guy splashing around and having fun.

d is for dobby

d is for dobby!

well friends, it was bound to happen. i knew my love of harry potter would inevitably make its way into this project. i was going to do d is for dumbledore, but i didn’t think i had enough time to do him justice on this day. perhaps another time.

instead, i doodled up dobby, sporting his pillowcase and harry potter’s sock, which of course makes him a free elf and a loyal friend to the illustrious “boy who lived.”

c is for chickadee

c is for chickadee.

i just love those cute little songbirds. colorado is spoiling us with high 60’s this week and i have some serious spring fever. i can’t wait for my iris bulb to pop up and bloom and i love to hear the birdies chirping all day. i figured this little guy could only help spread some spring happiness.

b is for brandi

continuing on with my visual-letter-a-day illustrations.

b is for….brandi, of course!

i haven’t ever create an avatar for myself, so i thought i’d give it a go. this illustration started in one style, but i wasn’t happy with it. i scrapped it and started a new style, which kind of turned into a badge. here i am, armed with my le pen and knitting needles.

anyway, i think i’ve been looking at it for too long so i’m just going to post it. maybe someday, i’ll revisit and make a new one.

a is for anchor

i decided to start a new illustration project. i’ll be creating an illustration every day for each letter of the alphabet. again, this is a self-initiated side project to encourage and grow my illustration skillz. if you have a suggestion for one of the letters, feel free to let me know!

today: a is for anchor.

january illustration

i’ve been wanting to practice illustration because i love it and i want to do more of it!  january’s “assignment” from my husband was a family of foxes. usually i crank stuff out pretty fast because I’m too impatient to spend a lot of time on something, but this was definitely a process. so here you go:
