TNL – Swingsets and Suffering

We live our lives trying to avoid the pain and suffering we see, feel, and experience. But what if suffering was to be embraced? That pain is not a thief stealing away our lives, but somehow a gift to show us how to live.

This series at TNL has reminded me of some of Henri Nouwen’s thoughts from his book, Spiritual Formation.

Henri Nouwen writes: “Jesus calls us to recognize that gladness and sadness are never separate, that joy and sorrow really belong together, and that mourning and dancing are part of the same movement.”

Here is the latest TNL Church series design:

x is for x-men

x is for x-men.

there really aren’t very many words that start with x. you know the usual…x-ray, xylophone. well those would have been boring. so today i illustrated magneto and wolverine’s masks. i enjoyed “x-men: first class”, which gave me a new perspective and appreciation for magneto. wolverine is pretty great too…

i couldn’t help but think of jurassic park today as i worked on this illustration. the raptor scenes were definitely some of the most frightening and hilarious. i mean, come on:

frightening.

hilarious.

i also have fond memories of friends calling me “the raptor” which may or may not have to do with me doing a raptor walk of sorts. anyway, here is today’s illustration.

s is for severus snape

s is for severus snape.

today is indeed a harry potter kind of day. i’ve got harry potter and the deathly hallows (read by jim dale) playing in the background as i move through my checklist for the day. i decided to attempt a portrait of snape in all his hooked nose splendor.

“I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death — if you aren’t as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach.”

oh snape.
